Ellie was skeptical of Spencer. The man was talkative as they walked, and while having human contact was something she found she had missed, she wished he’d be quiet for a few minutes while she tried to figure out a plan. What was she going to do when she got to Brighton Street? It was a part of town she wasn’t too familiar with. The fairgrounds were there, along with the medical district, and some apartments and townhouses that doctors and nurses used to rent out when they worked long shifts.

She kept a constant watch over her shoulder. She feared that Ricky would somehow break free from his restraints and get the cellar door open. He’d find his wallet was missing and know immediately that she had it. He’d know she was headed to his place, and he’d catch up and attack her from behind when she’d let her guard down.

It was her imagination running wild on her. It felt like she and Spencer were the only two humans left on the planet, yet somehow, it seemed like eyes were watching her every move, hiding in the shadows, and lurking behind building materials, ready to hop out and destroy the progress she had made.

“What makes you think what you’re looking for will be where we’re going?”

“I don’t.”

“So, why are we going there?”

Ellie glanced at Spencer from the corner of her eye. “No one told you to follow me. Why are you following me?”

“I have nothing better to do. And it’s good to talk to someone. I seriously thought I was the only one left. Do you know how terrifying that feeling is?”

“I do.”

Spencer let a hiss out from his teeth. “Not a woman of many words, are you?”

Ellie stopped walking for a second and faced him, rubbing her temples as she searched for the right thing to say to him. “If you only knew the hell I’ve been through since all this bullshit started.”

“I’m a good listener if you wanna talk about it.”

“I really don’t.” She shook her head. “Let’s just say, be glad you’re a man.” She turned on her heel and continued to walk. She had to keep moving. She had to find the women. One second too late could mean the difference between life and death.

“You’re one of those women, huh?”

“One of what women?”

“A feminist.”

She stopped walking again, clenching her jaw and fists to control herself. She needed every bit of energy she had, and she didn’t want to waste it on some random stranger who followed her simply for human contact.

“Have you been kidnapped and held against your will?”

Spencer shook his head and arched his eyebrow. “No.”

“Have you been threatened to be used to procreate? To grow the population?”

“No again,” he replied, raking his hand through his sandy brown hair.

“Have you had to kill another human being because they were holding you hostage and you had to get away?”

“What’s this about? Why are you asking me all this?”

“Because this feminist has had all that happen to her.
